Conversation Starter/Questions (10-15 minutes)
As we begin this new series looking at the story of Daniel, how familiar do you feel you are with his story? A lot of the stories you might know about Daniel are staples in most Sunday school settings. What are some of the stand-out things from the stories you know? Don’t worry about detail; we’ll get there in the series!
Sermon Based Questions
Before going into the sermon this week, did you think about the world we live in being like Babylon? Why or why not?
If you are already familiar with their stories, What made both Daniel and Jeremiah “spiritual minorities” amongst their own people?
What do you see in their examples that makes them look different than the world around them in both Jerusalem and Babylon?
Parker shared on Sunday that Jeremiah was known as the “weeping prophet” and that he was often hated for sharing the truth. Have you ever experienced hatred or a difficult situation when it comes to sharing your faith?
How do you think you would react if God sent the Prophet Jeremiah to rebuke you?
Have you been in a situation where you’ve had to handle rebuke from another believer? How did you do?
Digging Deeper
Parker discussed in the sermon how “Babylon” tries to change you. How does the Babylon that you live in try to change you?
Are there specific ways that you are tempted to look and act like a “Babylonian” in your own life?
Read Jeremiah 29:1-7. What would it look like to follow God’s commands for citizens of God’s City who have been taken into exile to follow each of these commands:
Embrace your temporary home
Seek the welfare of the city
Pray to the Lord on its behalf
Challenge and Prayer
How, as citizens of a heavenly kingdom, do we walk the line of being present in the “exile” God has put us in, while looking forward to the future home God has prepared for us in the New Jerusalem?
